US 101/Broadway Interchange and City of Burlingame Gateway Project
City of Burlingame, California
Haygood & Associates designed the aesthetic features for the highway interchange bridge and retaining walls, the city gateways and the landscape for the City of Burlingame, the San Mateo County Transportation Authority and Caltrans Dist. 4.
Serving as the only entrance to the city from US101, Burlingame city planners recognized the special nature of the project and expressed their interest in having the design reflect the elegance of "Old Burlingame" and for being known as a "City of Trees"... it would be their project "for all time". Haygood & Associates has been honored to assist the city in realizing their vision.
Drawing upon existing shapes and themes within the community, H&A created the double column corbels at the entrances to the bridge, arched fence pattern and historic acorn lights between taller LED lights mounted on historic fluted poles. Anchored in forests of Western Red Cedar and Redwood to the east and west as designed by H&A, the bridge will appear to be suspended between the deep green forests and at night the sparkling acorn lights will appear as a string of jewels. Trees at the gateway features to the east and west will be lighted from LED up lights further adding to the special appearance of the gateway features.
